Because they just can’t help it!
Perhaps I should explain…
Have you ever found yourself attracted to someone that you just met? Your heart beats faster and you can’t get your words out. You can’t control this behavior, it is part of your DNA.
This happens for a woman who finds herself attracted to a ‘bad boy’: a promiscuous man who will not be faithful to her. She knows that he may leave her, but she can’t resist because her DNA makes her attracted to him.
Why does attraction to bad boys survive in women’s DNA? Surely it is better to settle down with a faithful man who will support any children?
If a woman has a son with a ‘bad boy’ then he is likely to be promiscuous like his father. When he grows up he will have lots of children of his own.
If she has a son with a faithful partner, then he is likely to be faithful and have few children.
This means that a woman who has a instinctive attraction to ‘bad boys’ will have more grand-children than a woman who is attracted to faithful men. The genes which made her attracted to ‘bad boys’ are more likely to appear in future generations.
The strategy of choosing ‘bad boys’, although it is not a conscious choice, is a successful one. It becomes embedded in the DNA of future generations of women.
Women are attracted to ‘bad boys’ because it is a successful strategy over many generations, even if it is not good for them in the short-term.
Tomorrow’s post will apply this idea to business.
